The homeowners had an old wood deck that was too small and was starting to fail. They wanted a larger deck that would also give them direct access to their new hot tub. They were not required to have railing on the deck per code, and they did not want them, preferring instead to let their landscaping define the boundary. They did want railing for the stairs and decided to use oversize rail posts as an accent. They chose thermally modified pine for the decking because of it’s appearance and density, even though they realize that periodic maintenance would be required to maintain it’s appearance.
